In My Own Voice: African-American Women Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer

CBBC partners, Susan G. Komen, has a bold goal to reduce breast cancer mortality in the US by 50% by 2026 by ensuring access to and appropriate utilization of timely, quality care and supporting the latest scientific advances and breakthroughs that will lead to new and/or improved ways to detect, prevent, treat and ultimately cure breast cancer.   We are committed to reaching and serving communities with the greatest needs in order to achieve our vision of a world without breast cancer.

African-American women are often diagnosed younger, at later stages and with more aggressive breast cancers when the prognosis is poor, which contributes to nearly 40% higher death rates than white women.  Despite these facts, African-American women often go underrepresented in the conversation on the unique needs, priorities and barriers of women living with metastatic breast cancer.

‘In My Own Voice’, is an event for African-American women living with metastatic breast cancer, taking place November 2-3, 2018 in Dallas Texas.  This intimate gathering will educate African-American women on the latest advances in scientific research and clinical treatment specific to metastatic breast cancer as well as engage them in conversations to gain insight into their unique needs, barriers they face, and possible solutions to inform Komen’s efforts to improve racial and ethnic breast cancer outcomes.

The meeting will begin on Friday, November 2, 2018 with a presentation and an opportunity to meet and network with other African-American women living with metastatic breast cancer over dinner from 5-7  p.m.  The session on Saturday, November 3, 2018 will begin with breakfast and will wrap up by 12:00 p.m., so participants can return home in the afternoon.  Travel and accommodations will be paid for by Komen. Participants will not incur any expenses for attending the meeting.

If you know any African-American women living with metastatic breast cancer who might be interested in this opportunity, please feel free to share this information with them and/or have them reach out to us directly by emailing Liz Graves at [email protected] for additional information.
