Mayo Clinic is conducting an interview study to understand the experiences and views of Black women on:
- Cancer diagnosis and treatment
- Genetic testing for cancer risk
- Participating in research studies
Why? There are significant disparities in breast and ovarian cancer between African Americans and compared to the general population:
- Black and White women get breast and ovarian cancer at the same rate
- BUT Black women have:
- Higher rates of breast cancer under the age of 40
- More advanced cancer
- More triple negative breast cancer
- Less access to experimental treatments
- Black women are 40% more likely than White women to die from breast cancer
