Advance Research Study – Addressing Views of African Americans on Cancer Screening

Mayo Clinic is conducting an interview study to understand the experiences and views of Black women on:

  • Cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Genetic testing for cancer risk
  • Participating in research studies

Why? There are significant disparities in breast and ovarian cancer between African Americans and compared to the general population:

  • Black and White women get breast and ovarian cancer at the same rate
  • BUT Black women have:
  • Higher rates of breast cancer under the age of 40
  • More advanced cancer
  • More triple negative breast cancer
  • Less access to experimental treatments
  • Black women are 40% more likely than White women to die from breast cancer
